Israel must retain control of the Jordan Valley in order to have defensible borders, former Foreign Ministry director-general Dore Gold argues in a new report released exclusively to The Jerusalem Post.
Thar control, argues Gold, counters claims that threats to Israel have diminished, or that new technology could make up for a territorial withdrawal.
Gold released the report, published by the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, which he heads, because of his concern that the opposite view is gaining traction in Washington.
“As long as ground forces remain the decisive component in Israel’s national security strategy, then terrain, topography, and strategic depth have not lost their relevance,” Gold wrote. “They have always been – and still remain – critical components that Israel needs for defensible borders.”
